Living Donor Awareness
At Quevera, we believe in supporting our team members through every challenge and raising awareness about critical needs within our community. This month, we are rallying behind Melissa Wood and her husband, Michael Traina, who is in urgent need of a kidney transplant.
Melissa’s Story:
As some of you may know, my husband is on dialysis and awaiting a kidney transplant. He was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease (CKD) over ten years ago, at Stage 3. Despite our best efforts to manage it, CKD progresses, and about 2 ½ – 3 years ago, his nephrologist informed us that it was time to transition to dialysis.
Waiting for a transplant can be a lengthy process, with some people waiting up to eight years for a donation. This journey is not only

physically demanding but also emotionally and mentally taxing. Dialysis is rough on the body, often making daily activities challenging. To remain on the ‘Active’ transplant list, my husband must meet specific bloodwork numbers and maintain a target weight, which involves biweekly doctor appointments, regular blood work, and significant weight loss.
One of the best options for those awaiting a transplant is finding a match through a living donor. Living donors do not have to be relatives, which was a concern for us since my husband was adopted. Over the past few years, we have been fortunate to receive incredible support and learn about many cases where living donors have transformed lives.
How You Can Help:
We are reaching out to our Quevera family and beyond to spread the word about becoming a potential living donor. If you or anyone in your network is interested in exploring this life-saving opportunity, please consider getting tested. Here’s the contact information for Johns Hopkins Living Donors:
