April 2024 Year of Giving: Kennedy Krieger Institute
At Quevera, we believe in the power of giving back, especially when it comes to supporting organizations that make a profound impact on the lives of individuals in our Q Family. This April, we are honored to announce our support for the Kennedy Krieger Institute, a beacon of hope and progress for individuals with learning challenges.
About Kennedy Krieger Institute School Programs: Kennedy Krieger School Programs encompass five specialized schools dedicated to providing comprehensive services to students with learning challenges. These programs offer personalized instruction aimed at nurturing academic, social, emotional, and behavioral skills. With a transdisciplinary approach, students receive tailored education in an environment that embraces their individual strengths.
Our Initiative: Quevera is proud to stand alongside the Kennedy Krieger Institute by raising funds for five Step2 Wagons for their school. Priced at $100 each, these wagons play a crucial role in rewarding children with sensory issues for their positive behavior through wagon rides. Unfortunately, constant usage has led to wear and tear, necessitating frequent replacements.
Why Kennedy Krieger Institute? Our decision to support the Kennedy Krieger Institute stems from a deeply personal connection. One of our own, Crissy R., shares her heartfelt story of how the institute has profoundly impacted her son, Alex.
“Alex (8yo) was diagnosed with Autism at 2 years old. Like many parents, Chris and I have struggled with learning that our son has a lifelong disability. As Alex got older and went to school, we quickly learned that a regular public school was not benefiting Alex. We dreaded sending him every single day because we knew that he wasn’t learning anything and that public school was just not the place for him. We asked for an IEP meeting where my “mama bear” came out and I simply stated that this situation wasn’t working and we needed to know what our options were. We were told that he would be placed in a “non public placement” program. Through this process, we toured the Kennedy Krieger Institute School – Fairmount Campus. From the moment we walked in, we knew this is where Alex was supposed to be. The staff, from the security guards, to the custodians, all the way to the principal is absolutely amazing. Since Alex has started at KKI, he has learned so much from the people that know how to handle kids with disabilities of all kinds.”
